(Berks County, Pa.) — The Heritage of Green Hills Retirement Community has announced that Lancaster-based Wohlsen Construction will serve as the lead contractor of its new 78-acre community in Cumru Township, Berks County.

“We chose Wohlsen because they clearly have the ability and expertise to realize our vision for a new kind of retirement community,” said Kristen E. Kutac, Chief Operating Officer of American Heritage Communities, Inc., which is developing The Heritage of Green Hills.  “Their experience managing retirement living projects, including Ann’s Choice Retirement Community in Warminster, set them apart throughout the selection process.”

The Heritage of Green Hills broke ground on June 15, and site preparation work has continued since then. The Heritage of Green Hills will become Berks County’s largest continuing care retirement community, with more than 460 apartments and 39 villas housing more than 800 residents.

Founded in 1890, Wohlsen has provided general construction and construction management in Pennsylvania and Delaware for more than 100 years. The company has completed more than 85 projects at 40 different senior living communities.

“Wohlsen Construction Company is excited to be a partner with American Heritage Communities in making Heritage at Green Hills a reality,” said Dave Brodie, Executive Vice President at Wohlsen. “We look forward to being a partner in this significant project that will ultimately enhance the lives of the seniors of Berks County.”

The Heritage of Green Hills project carries a total cost of $140 million and will create 200 new jobs. In addition, the completed community will generate hundreds of thousands in tax revenues that will benefit local governments without burdening schools.

The Heritage of Green Hills expects to welcome its first residents in Fall 2008, when the first phase of construction is complete.
