(Berks County, Pa.) Recipients of the second annual Heritage Senior Awards were honored during a charity dinner on Thursday, April 17.
The Awards, created by The Heritage of Green Hills Retirement Community, shine a spotlight on the efforts of those in Berks County who have provided exemplary service, support, or opportunity to seniors in the community.
The 2008 Heritage Senior Awards were presented in five categories. This year’s recipients:
· Lifetime Achievement Award: Wayne Weidner, former CEO and Chairman of National Penn Bancshares and an active supporter of numerous senior focused community projects and organizations
· Senior of the Year:
John Vogel, Vice Chair for the Berks County Office of Aging Advisory Board and Chairman for Southeast Region of the Pennsylvania Council on Aging
· Person of the Year: Ray and Carol Neag, who recently donated $250,000 to Berks Encore (formerly the Berks County Senior Citizens Council), the largest donation in the history of that organization
· Student of the Year: Lauren Rampolla, who volunteers for Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, and Central Catholic High School’s Adopt-a-Grandparent program
· Business of the Year: SCORE, an organization that provides a venue for retired professionals to contribute their talents to assist entrepreneurs and early-stage businesses
A panel of respected community leaders selected these honorees from among nominations made by individuals and organizations throughout Berks County.

The charity dinner event raised more than $1200 for the Berks County Meals on Wheels program operated by Berks Encore (formerly the Berks County Senior Citizens Council) and Berks County Office of Aging.
The awards event, sponsored by The Heritage of Green Hills Retirement Community, was created to raise awareness of all those who serve Berks County’s seniors. Nomination forms for the 2009 Heritage Senior Awards will be available January 1, 2009.
